Founder Hop Howlett

Implementing Operational Success...

A 1972 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Hop Howlett has been developing and presenting special skills training programs in a variety of technical arenas for nearly thirty years. His military service began as an infantry officer with the Berlin Brigade in West Berlin, Germany. He was later trained and certified as an explosive ordnance disposal officer and served as the unit commander of an Army bomb squad in the Washington, D.C., area.

Following military service, Hop was certified by Westinghouse Electric Corporation as a nuclear plant engineer and shift supervisor for reactor plant operations at the Department of Energy's Naval Reactors Facility, part of the U.S. Navy's Nuclear Propulsion Program. As an operator, shift supervisor, and training manager, he acquired nearly a decade of hands-on experience in naval nuclear plant operations, maintenance, training, and emergency preparedness.

In June of 1988, Hop founded TECHSTAR, Inc., a multi-service training and publishing firm whose mission is to develop practical training programs and materials for improving the performance of industrial teams. Under his leadership, TECHSTAR, Inc., has acquired a superior reputation for effective, interesting training in the areas of leadership and human performance. Conventional and nuclear power generators, oil refineries, chemical production plants, Department of Energy sites, and a variety of other industries throughout the United States, Canada, and overseas have found The Industrial Operator's Handbook, 2nd Edition, and it's companion volume, Maintenance and the Safety Envelope—studies in the causes and remedies of industrial accidents—to be invaluable in stopping mistakes that cost time, money, and sometimes lives. From CEOs to rank-and-file team members, clients regularly cite this training as the most useful they have received in their industrial careers.

Since industrial team performance is not simply founded on technical competence, the TECHSTAR, Inc., staff are also staunch believers in the importance of common sense leadership—the need to balance technical competence with people competence. In that vein, TECHSTAR, Inc., has developed a visual and practical leadership text and course designed to illustrate the right ways and the wrong ways to lead. Trustworthy Leaders emphasizes that leadership style, be it soft or tough, must always be subordinate to a few basic leadership principles—and that the actions of great leaders always serve the team first.

Mr. Howlett passed away on February 14, 2018 due to complications of Parkinson's Disease.
